Private Vatican Access: The Sistine Chapel Before Opening, the Gardens, and the Necropolis

An early-morning private visit to the Vatican Museums, beginning before the institution opens to the public, allows the Sistine Chapel to be experienced in conditions close to what Michelangelo intended: a relatively small number of people, space to stand back and look at the ceiling without being pressed forward, and a guide who can work at the pace the paintings require. This access exists and is available through specific arrangements that require significant advance booking.

The Vatican Gardens, covering more than half of Vatican City, can be visited on private guided tours that move through four centuries of papal landscape design and outdoor sculpture. The Scavi, the excavation beneath St. Peter’s Basilica that runs through the ancient necropolis and toward the tomb believed to be St. Peter’s, requires a permit booked months in advance. A private Rome experience that includes the Vatican at this level of access bears no resemblance to the standard Museums visit.
